Pixi Vitamin C Toner

Pixi Vitamin C Toner

Where to buy: From the Pixi Beauty Website HERE

Price: £10

Volume: 100ml

What is this?: A Vitamin C tonic(from the pixi website): 'Vitamin C has potent antioxidant power, promotes healthy collagen production and is known to boost skin luminosity.'

Who is it for?: I have a hard time describing who this is for. I would say sensitive skin (as it must have a low % of vitamin C due to the packaging) BUT it contains lots of essential oils and fragrance, so this could irritate people's skin. If you are sensitive to vitamin C but not fragrance/essential oils, then this is good for you. If you are not sensitive to anything and want added vitamin C along with your vitamin C serum, then this is also good for you. I wouldn't say that this is particularly great for dehydrated dry skins (but of course you can use it), and oily skins may prefer it.

Directions: 'Use daily after cleansing'

How I use it: in the AM and PM: Just apply onto a cotton pad and swipe

Texture: Water. Absorbs fast.

NOTE: Vitamin C Percent: Pixi don't disclose their %. They have let me know that there is a good amount to see the brightening effects however. But I do think that it must still be very low because 1. It's not in an airtight container and 2. It's not in a container that blocks the light out. This does mean that this is good for sensitive skins as it probably has a very low % of vitamin C.

Direct Quote from Pixi representative to help you understand the efficacy of this product: 'In regards to the percentage of Vitamin C in our Vitamin C range, it is a proprietary amount of Vitamin C which means it is: enough so it doesn't cause irritation even on sensitive skin but efficacious over time with incredible results. We used specially processed Vitamin C to prevent breakdown of active ingredient before it reaches the targeted epidermis layer cell to activate. It is micro-encapsulated in cyclodextrins, protecting it to provide potentiation of its efficiency and controlling its release, prolonging its action time.'

Key Ingredients: Beta-Carotene (Anti-ageing), Vitamin C (Anti-ageing and brightening), Vitamin E (antioxidant), Citric Acid (Anti-ageing), Ferulic Acid (Antioxidant). Sodium Hyaluronate (hydration).

Fragrance?: Yes! So many fruit extracts for fragrance i.e. lemon peel and oil peel – so be aware sensitive skins. I don't like fragrance and find it unnecessary in products ALTHOUGH I must say that this is probably the best smelling fragranced product I've used because it literally smells like orange juice and who doesn't like the smell of oranges?? But of course, I would prefer it not there at all.

Packaging: Plastic bottle. The screw cap is easy to screw and unscrew. I also like the little nib at the end as it makes it easy to drip into a cotton pad. It's see-through to allow the yellow colour of the liquid to be seen.

Good Under Makeup?: Yes

How long have I been using this?: A month and a half

The Effect: Skin brightening and minor hydration. I have enjoyed using this in the AM everyday as my toner because although there's a lot of ingredients in this product I'd prefer weren't there, I do like that is has micro encapsulated vitamin C and I like the addition of other skin-protecting ingredients.

With the plastic packaging on

What I like:

  • Micro-encapsulated vitamin C, I do think this has helped brighten my skin and I like the addition of sodium hyaluronate and glycerin i.e. this does give some form of hydration to the skin
  • low % of vitamin C so ok for those who are sensitive to high vitamin C %
  • Fast-absorbing
  • Packaging = easy to use
  • (for those who like fragrance in skincare products, this has a lovely smell)
  • Did not irritate/sting or burn my skin

What I don't like:

  • I don't know what the % of vitamin C this has
  • Fragrance
  • Essential Oils
  • If my skin was sensitised, I would not use this for fear of making my skin worse due to all the essential oils/fragrance
  • Requires long use to see any sort of result (I have only noticed a small difference after a month and a half of using)

Rating and Conclusion: 2.9/5 – I'm not a fan of added fragrance, essential oils and but I do think that this has helped my skin with overall brightening. HOWEVER I do like the fact that there is a vitamin C toner out there – but this has the same issue as the Rohto/Hada Labo vitamin C where a % is not disclosed and it has fragrance! I would like an unscented, undyed and essential-oil free vitamin C toner with a disclosed %. I would not run away if it showed that a product had 5% as I can live with taking a while before seeing results! I will finish this toner.

Would I purchase?: No. I don't want fragrance in my toners or essential oils. I would rather use an unscented product like the Timeless C E Ferulic Serum or the Skinceuticals C E Ferulic serum and even the Pixi Vitamin C Serum over this.
